These pieces reveal how familiar melodies can cross from their original form into complex modern compositions - from Percy Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy, which transforms English folk songs into vivid, character-filled miniatures, and David Maslanka's Symphony No. 2, which incorporates tradition African American melody "Deep River" into a deeply spiritual symphonic journey, to John Carter's Cantata, which reimagines spirituals and sacred song through fresh harmonic and rhythmic language.
