History Savers: Archives at Home

Marion Public Library What does it take to preserve a document for 300 years or more? This two-part course offers a practical introduction to the principles of archival preservation, digitization best practices, and the fundamentals of digital preservation. Session 1: This session will focus on archival thinking and physical materials. Together we'll look at how to combat the agents of deterioration and how to apply archival principles to your materials at home.Session 2: In the second session, we will explore the fundamentals of digital preservation, basic metadata standards, and best practices for digitizing paper-based materials.Each 1.5hr course led by:Miranda Shield. Miranda currently serves as an Information Services Librarian at MPL, where she cares for multiple collections including the Local History Room and history section of the circulating nonfiction collection. History and its preservation have always been an important part of her professional and personal life. She previously served as the Reference Archivist and Librarian for an Ohio County government, where her focus was on collection preservation and management, as well as patron access. Miranda learned the skills required to care for historical and archival collections while earning her Master's in Library and Information Science from Kent State University, specializing in Museum Studies and Archival Preservation.
