Reading Marion Monuments
Marion Public Library Session 1: Meet at Marion Veterans Park to view and discuss a variety of monuments. Learn to "read a memorial" (symbols, size, color, placement, materials, inscriptions, etc.), just as you would read a book. *Wear shoes and clothing appropriate for walking and the weather.October 26 class located at: Corner of Delaware Avenue & McKinley Park BoulevardSession 2 (November 2): Learn more about Place Studies and Memorial Culture, and how human-built environments guide our responses to local history, as well as national events over time through the monuments we build and preserve.Each 1.5hr course led by:Sue Oakes, recently retired from The Ohio State University of Marion after more than four decades of teaching. Her research interests include Place Studies and Memorial Culture, as well as Science & Technology Studies in Oral History. On road trips, she stops for every historical marker!
