Marion History: Through a Fish-Eye

Marion Public Library The story of the Fish family is, at its heart, the story of Marion County itself. It follows seven generations who witnessed the transformation of Marion County from dense wilderness into a modern community. The Fish family's experience mirrors many of the major developments that shaped the United States during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.Beginning with Preserved Fish and his family in 1821 during westward expansion and the opening of Ohio. They arrived in the wilderness and experienced a harsh environment that brought both heartbreak and success.This 1.5hr course led by:Sharon Gattshall, a Marion native whose family first settled in Marion County in 1821. She is a seventh-generation member of the Fish family living in the county and has traced her family's history from its earliest local roots to the present day. Sharon holds bachelor's degrees in History and Psychology, as well as a master's degree in Higher Education from Kansas State University. She has been employed at The Ohio State University Marion for more than 30 years and is a Senior Academic Advisor. In addition to her professional work, she is an active researcher of Marion County's local history and genealogy.
