Linguistics Colloquium Series: How Applied Linguistics Prepared Me for Research in VR, AI, and Healthcare Education

The Linguistics Department of Ohio University presents Dr. Ming Cheng discussing: "Interdisciplinary by Design: How Applied Linguistics Prepared Me for Research in VR, AI, and Healthcare Education" in Gordy 309 and via Teams Join the meeting here Abstract: Applied linguistics is an inherently interdisciplinary field that contributes to solving a wide range of real-world problems as its theories, methods, and approaches often extend beyond the language classroom. In this colloquium, I reflect on my academic journey from earning an M.A. In Applied Linguistics to pursuing a Ph.D. In Instructional Technology, illustrating how my linguistic training prepared me for research in virtual reality, artificial intelligence, instructional design, and healthcare education. Drawing on projects in language teaching, VR-based learning environments, AI-supported instruction, and nursing education, I discuss how skills such as needs analysis, learner-centered design, and research methodology enabled me to grow as an interdisciplinary researcher. I also emphasize the importance of intellectual curiosity, methodological flexibility, and collaboration in expanding professional opportunities and generating research that addresses relevant educational challenges across diverse contexts.
