What Matters in Corporate and Securities Scholarship?

Corporate and securities scholars enjoy a special role as producers of research that is intellectually and editorially independent, but who can also be in conversation with practitioners, market participants, regulators, and courts. Yet in serving, challenging, informing, and understanding these actors and institutions, scholars collectively face considerable resource constraints in the production of new knowledge. There are relatively few such people, after all, and each is limited in the amount of research he or she can produce over a year or a career. Those factors - proximity to institutional and market power and constrained resources - call for corporate and securities scholars collectively and individually to decide what matters. That is, to what projects should the academy and its members allocate their limited research resources? This lecture will shed light on that decision-making with a review of how corporate and securities scholarship might matter to the broader world, to the legal academy, and to individual researchers. This review will include results from a topical study of approximately 12,000 corporate and securities papers published in U.S. Law reviews over the last half-century. --- Event Details:
