Understanding the Ohio Amish: Part Three

Van Young offers an in-depth exploration of Amish culture and life. People are fascinated by the Amish because they offer a striking contrast to modern life by eschewing technology, embracing simplicity, and preserving centuries-old traditions in a fast-paced, digital world. This fascinating, 3-part series explores their religion, customs, beliefs, businesses and employment, and marriage and family structure. Part 3: Amish Business and Life Lessons. This final segment will explain three main aspects of Amish life: Amish business, rites of passage, and recreation; plus, some good old-fashioned Amish wisdom. Learn how and why the Amish resist modern technology yet still use it in creative ways. Also, why do the Amish hold on so strongly to their way of life and why do we look upon them with such curiosity? Van Young presents talks on American history, travel, and current events at libraries, senior centers, retirement communities and colleges throughout Central Ohio. He serves as president of the Griswold Center American History Study Group in Worthington, Ohio.
