The Hopewell Culture earthwork complex at Marietta, Ohio, has been prominent in discussions of ancient Native American constructions for over 200 years, and several major elements of the Marietta site have been preserved. But where did the people who built and used the earthworks live day-to-day? What were their settlements and subsistence practices like? Archaeologist Wes Clarke reviews the evidence and discusses nearby Hopewell living sites. Wesley Clarke is a Registered Professional Archaeologist on staff at The Castle Museum in Marietta. He has over fifty years of experience with archaeological research in the American Midwest and Southeast Asia, and is currently excavating an early historic pottery site on The Castle grounds. This lecture is part of a series of events organized by the Ohio Archaeological Council in recognition of Ohio Archaeology Month. To see the full event schedule, visit their Facebook page at
