Life Before Ohio University: Manasseh Cutler exhibition opening

Join Ohio University Libraries for the opening of a new exhibition highlighting the life, work, and lasting influence of Manasseh Cutler. Over the past year, students and staff have digitized and transcribed materials from the Manasseh Cutler Collection, uncovering the story of a remarkable figure whose impact extended far beyond his role as a minister. Cutler was a botanist who corresponded with an international network of scientists, a Revolutionary War chaplain, and a statesman whose efforts helped secure passage of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Although he visited Ohio only once, his son Ephraim became one of the region's early settlers, helping to establish the family's connection to the state and to Ohio University. Visitors are invited to explore this exhibit featuring original archival materials from 10:00 a.m. To 2:00 p.m. The event will also feature a special living history presentation 11 a.m.-12 p.m., by historical interpreter Ken Bowald, presented in partnership with Rural Action and Appalachian Understories. Through a first-person portrayal, Bowald brings Cutler to life, offering audiences an engaging look at the minister, physician, scientist, and statesman who helped shape the future of Ohio and the Northwest Territory. Following the 30- 45 minute presentation, attendees are invited to participate in a question-and-answer session with Greta Suiter, Manuscripts Archivist at the Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections, Preservation & Digital
