Physics and Astronomy Colloquium - Dr. Robert Cooper
Dr. Robert Cooper - Naval Surface Warfare Center Abstract: Radiation Effects Testing of Microelectronics For Naval System A major component of the nation's nuclear deterrence is the Trident II D5 missile system. Trident is a submarine-launched ballistic missile system that has recently completed a life extension upgrade for operations into the 2040s. A second life extension (LE2) is now underway to ensure operations deep into 2080s, and it entails a broad modernization across a swath of subsystems. Trident must demonstrate exceptional reliability in space and strategic radiation environments, and this has broad-reaching implications for the deployment of modernized, radiation-hardened microelectronics as well as the deployment of improved radiation test facilities. In this vein, I will discuss growing concerns about our understanding of neutron single-event effects (nSEE) as well as improving dosimetry at new radiation test facilities. Undergraduate researchers and early career personnel have played a key role in this work, and I will also highlight the internship and hiring opportunities available at Crane.
