Stoicism: An Ancient Philosophy for Today?
Dr. Andrew Mills discusses Stoicism - a philosophical worldview developed in ancient Greece that captivated everyone from slaves to emperors of classical Rome - and is now enjoying a renaissance. In this interactive talk, Dr. Mills introduces the basic principles of Stoicism and show why so many people today are turning to this more than 2,000-year-old philosophical outlook to deal with the challenges of modern life. Andrew P. Mills is Professor of Philosophy at Otterbein University and Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion. He teaches classes on the philosophy of death, logic, existentialism, environmental ethics, happiness, and philosophical themes in the works of Homer. He has published work on the pedagogy of philosophy, philosophy of language, pedagogical personas, and the philosophical themes in the Harry Potter novels and in Downton Abbey. He co-edited an anthology of narrative essays from award-winning philosophy professors, is the co-editor of the book series The Bloomsbury Guides to Philosophy Teaching, and his essay, "What's So Good about a College Education?" has been used at universities across the country as a tool to introduce students to the distinctive value of going to college. He has co-led numerous workshops on teaching philosophy and served as President of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers.
