Art Exhibit: "In the Meantime"

"In the Meantime" is an exhibit of the work of UToledo art alumna, Kayla Kirk. Exhibition Dates Aug.31 - Oct. 4 Exhibition Reception Sept. 18, 5-7 p.m. Artist Statement This recent body of works explores what takes place in the "meantime." Using common items, sculpted out of clay, I'm investigating common themes of grief, joy, and self reflection. As a trained functional potter, the vessel - whether a bucket, box, or vase becomes an allegory for the body. One day we will all die and our flesh will rot off our bones. In the meantime, we'll figure out how to find joy amongst grief. About Kayla Kirk In 2017, Kayla graduated from the University of Toledo with a B.F.A. In Studio Art (Sculpture) and a B.A. In Art History. She began her visual arts career as a pottery decorator for The Henry Ford Museum's Greenfield Village. Kayla used her days off to teach herself the basics of functional pottery in a makeshift studio in her basement. This endeavor led her to a teaching and Production Potter position at Detroit's historic Pewabic Pottery. Since 2024, Kayla has been living and working in Toledo as owner and operator of Charmed Ceramics . Kayla's work is guided by personal narrative and energized by the magical transformation of raw clay into fine art. She explores the boundlessness of form, texture, and color to craft pieces that exude whimsy, humanity, and organic joy with an appreciation for interconnections with nature.
