Fostering Civil Discourse Series: The American Founders on Education-To Shape and Maintain an American Mind
Join the Clark County Public Library for a lecture series that celebrates and explores America's 250 years. This series is open to all but designed for professional development opportunities for social studies K-12 educators. Teachers can earn continuing education units (CEU) by attending the series. This is the third in a four-part series. This presentation will discuss how the American Founders conceived of civic education as indispensable for maintaining a free and flourishing republic. In addressing this topic, important Ohio requirements in both American Government and American History will be addressed, including the characteristics of effective citizenship, importance of an informed citizenry, and historical context of the Founding. The education teachers provide to students has a great role in making sure young people grow up to be well-informed citizens who know what their rights are, the general structure of the government, and how to use that knowledge to preserve and defend liberty in a shared country. This talk will show that, although the times have changed, the American Founders have useful insights that teachers can have in mind as they prepare their classes. Today's presenter is Dr. Joey Barretta, a visiting faculty associate at Wright State University. He earned his Ph.D. From Hillsdale College's Van Andel Graduate School of Statesmanship (dissertation on Frederick Douglass's post-slavery prescriptions for freedom) and was an Ashbrook Scholar at Ashla
