The History of Prairies in Ohio and Marion County

Marion Public Library Have you ever wondered what Marion County looked like before it was settled? Join Park Naturalist James Anderson for a two-session exploration of the unique prairie ecosystems that were once part of the historical Sandusky Plains.Session 1: We will visit the Larry R. Yoder Prairie Learning Laboratory at The Ohio State University Marion campus for a guided walkthrough of one of the area's restored prairies. Although many prairie wildflowers will have finished blooming, participants will discover how to identify plants by their seed heads and other characteristics while learning about the wildlife that depends on this remarkable habitat.October 13 Class Location will be at The Ohio State Marion Campus (Student lot 3 closest to the prairie).Session 2: James will present an engaging PowerPoint program exploring the ecology, history, and conservation of Marion County's prairies. Learn how these diverse grasslands shaped our region, why they are among Ohio's rarest ecosystems today, and what is being done to preserve and restore them for future generations.Each 1hr course led by:James Anderson, the Park Naturalist for Marion County Park District. In this role, James shares his passion for nature and wildlife with the community. He has worked for the park district for 11 years and has been a naturalist for 16 years, during which he has worked in camp and non-camp facilities.
