Film Screening of Agora!

Join us for a screening of Agora (2009), Alejandro Amenábar's historical drama set in 4th-century Alexandria! There will be pizza from Dominoes! When: Thursday, September 24 | 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM Where: Mather House 100 Before the film, our new faculty member in the department, Dr. Joshua Fincher, will give a brief introduction to the movie and its historical context. Joshua Fincher got his PhD in Classics at Yale University and specializes in Late Antiquity, epic and didactic poetry, historical linguistics, the concept of the hero, and Biblical Hebrew and Ugaritic. His current research is focused on literary approaches and translation/commentaries on neglected didactic poetry in Greek and Latin on medicine, science, astronomy, rhetoric, magic, and agriculture. He is excited to be teaching here at Case Western as a lecturer and looks forward to bringing his specialties to his courses - if you're interested in anything he works on, please ask him about it! Agora dramatizes a period of rigid ideologies at war and mass civil and cultural disturbance in Alexandria, focusing on the pursuit of science and philosophy in an environment of ideological and religious extremism - a timely topic for today.
