NQPI Seminar 10/1/2026 - Merce Roig Server
The Nanoscale and Quantum Phenomena Institute (NQPI) Seminar Series is pleased to welcome Merce Roig Server, Research Associate, Physics & Astronomy, College of Letters & Science, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, as our featured speaker on Thursday, October 1 at 4:10 p.m. All seminars take place in Walter 145 and are also accessible virtually via Teams. Title: Altermagnetism: Properties and Microscopic Models Abstract: Altermagnetism has recently been proposed as a new magnetic phase that features vanishing net magnetization, like antiferromagnets, but also exhibits time-reversal symmetry breaking and momentum-dependent spin-split band structure, akin to ferromagnets. In this talk, I will introduce altermagnetism and discuss possible material candidates and applications for this recently identified magnetic order. Most existing theoretical research is based on density functional theory (DFT). Here, I will present our recent progress in developing realistic minimal models for altermagnetism that reproduce DFT electronic band structures for different material candidates [1]. I will then turn to the interplay between the anomalous Hall effect and magnetization in altermagnets, where we develop a Landau free energy expansion for altermagnetism from microscopic models [2].
