Freedom for Who: Indigenous Nations and the American Revolution

Spurred by the French and Indian War, Pontiac's Rebellion and the Proclamation Line, the American Revolution changed the world and ultimately the land that would become the United States. Indigenous nations were placed in a position to decide how best to protect their lands and people. Working on promises made to them by the Patriot cause, many nations ultimately fought for the Colonists. Learn who these nations were, what their contributions were to the struggle for Independence, and the ultimate betrayal they faced afterward. Heather Bruegl is a citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and first-line descendent Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican. Heather is a doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where she studies First Nations Education. Her dissertation research focuses on the importance of telling the truth in history in museums and cultural institutions. Heather is also a public historian and activist who works with institutions and organizations for Indigenous sovereignty and collective liberation.
